Lanai used to be a huge Dole pineapple plantation, but hardly any pineapple is still grown there now. A better nickname for Lanai is "the private island" since it is privately owned by Castle & Cooke. They have decided that it is more profitable to market their two private resorts and golf courses than to farm pineapple. Because the entire island is privately owned, everything is more expensive there than on Maui.

Many people go to Lanai for golf ... the two courses are excellent. This photo shows an ocean-front hole at the Challenge at Manele ... if you hit the ball out of bounds, forget about it. It's gone! It is possible to visit Lanai for the day taking the ferry from Maui. Expeditions offers round trip passage for $50. Once the ferry arrives at Lanai, you can walk to the beach near Manele Bay Hotel. Excellent snorkeling is available there ... although it is dependent upon surf conditions. Expeditions also offers packages that include round trip ferry service, ground transportation, and greens fees at either the Challenge at Manele or the Experience at Koele.
The notable landmark as you approach Manele Boat Harbor is Sweetheart Rock ...
As for the island of Lanai itself, it is not the most scenic of the Hawaiian islands. Since Lanai lies in the rain shadow of Maui, it is very dry. Only the highest elevations on the island get much moisture. The Munro Trail and Garden of the Gods offer some interesting scenery, but the best part of Lanai is what can be seen from the ocean. Check out some of the awesome Lanai snorkel boat trips available from Maui ... including the large pod of spinner dolphins that are seen almost every day!
